soket itu langsung terhubung ke rangkaian output dari amplifier dan memutusnya
dari speaker ketika jack headphone ditancapkan. Namun terdapat permasalah
ketika cara ini dilakukan. Output dari amplifier memiliki impedansi rendah yang
sesuai untuk speaker, namun tidak untuk headphone. Persisnya begini:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 14.2pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: -14.2pt; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">1. Headphone mempunyai impedansi tinggi,
sekitar 16-64 ohm. Sedangkan speaker pada umumnya memiliki impedansi yang lebih
rendah, sekitar 4-8 ohm. Dengan demikian output amplifier diperkirakan memiliki
impedansi yang kurang lebih sama dengan impedansi beban agar daya amplifier
tersalurkan secara optimal.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 14.2pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: -14.2pt; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">2. Headphone memiliki rating daya yang rendah
(maksimum sekitar 100-200mW). Sedangkan amplifier mengeluarkan daya lebih
tinggi yang bervariasi mulai dari beberapa ratus miliwatt sampai ratusan watt).<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">Jika
headphone disambungkan secara langsung tanpa memperhatikan kedua pemasalahan
ini, maka daya amplifier yang terlalu tinggi bisa merusak headphone.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;"><o:p> </o:p>Nah,
sebenarnya dengan impedansi headphone yang lebih tinggi ini, maka secara
otomatis, daya yang dikeluarkan akan turun dari nominal daya amplifier. Teori

headphone dengan impedansi 32 Ohm dan daya maksimum 135mW akan dihubungkan ke
sebuah amplifier <i>Hi-Fi</i> berdaya maksimum 18 Watt RMS dengan impedansi 8
Ohm. Bagaimana caranya agar audio dapat didengarkan dengan headphone, dengan
suara yang mendekati kualitas asli amplifier tersebut?<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">Setidaknya
ada 4 cara yang dapat dilakukan untuk menyambungkan headphone itu. Cara pertama
adalah dengan menggunakan trafo penyesuai impedansi. Namun demikian, mencari
trafo yang sesuai dengan rancangan yang spesifik bukanlah hal yang praktis
untuk dilakukan. Cara yang kedua yaitu dengan menyambungkan secara langsung,
namun memberikan resistor pembagi tegangan atau pengatur volume pada input
amplifier. Cara ini akan bekerja, namun karena sistem amplifier menghasilkan
noise dan amplifier tersebut berdaya cukup besar, maka noise juga akan
terdengar sangat kuat di headphone. Cara yang ketiga yaitu dengan menyambungkan
resistor secara seri pada headphone. Dengan car aini maka daya pada headphone
akan turun, namun kita akan kehilangan nada-nada tinggi di headphone. Hal ini
disebabkan karena headphone bersifat induktor, sehingga ketika dihubungkan
dengan resistor terutama yang bernilai tinggi, maka dia akan membentuk sebuah
topologi Low Pass Filter. Pada prinsipnya, resistor seri harus sekecil mungkin agar frekuensi tinggi dapat dipertahankan, sedangkan daya yang dilepaskan oleh headphone harus disesuaikan dengan kemampuannya. Sehingga solusi yang paling tepat dan efisien adalah dengen memberikan resistor pembagi tegangan pada output amplifier. Nilai dari komponen
yang digunakan dapat ditentukan dengan hitungan sederhana berikut ini:</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">Karena
P = V^2/R, maka amplifier 18 watt RMS dengan impedansi 8 Ohm memiliki
tegangan maksimum sebesar Vmi = sqrt(P*Rs) = 12 Volts.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">

adalah Ph=V^2/Rh = 4.5 Watt. Daya ini jauh di atas kemampuan maksimum headphone

daya yang dikeluarkan headphone 135 mW, maka tegangan pada terminal headphone

nilai pembagian tegangan pada headphone dengan tegangan output amplifier
haruslah sama dengan perbandingan impedansi dari 2.08/12 = (R2||32)/R1+(R2||32).
Sedangkan impedansi total dari rangkaian tersebut harus dibuat sama dengan
impedansi speaker seharusnya yaitu 8 Ohm. sehingga R1+(R2||32) = 8 Ohm. <o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">Nah,
dari kedua persamaan ini, maka kita bisa menentukan nilai yang tepat dari R1
dan R2 agar daya yang dikeluarkah headphone tepat, tidak terlalu besar ataupun
terlalu kecil, dan amplifier terbebani dengan semestinya sehingga suara yang
dikeluarkan oleh headphone mendekati suara asli dari amplifier ketika terhubung
dengan speaker. Terakhir, jangan lupa memastikan bahwa semua resistor yang
